The sudden death of Ol Kalou Member of Parliament, David Njuguna Kiaraho, has sent shockwaves across the political landscape, reigniting concerns over the rising toll of leaders lost in recent times.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed that Kiaraho passed away on Sunday, March 29, at approximately 1:20 a.m. while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital. No official cause of death has yet been disclosed, though reports indicate he had been seeking medical care locally and abroad for some time.
Kiaraho, a third-term legislator and a member of the Jubilee Party, had represented Ol Kalou Constituency since 2013, securing re-election in both 2017 and 2022. He served on the Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and the Procedure and House Rules Committee, contributing significantly to parliamentary deliberations on infrastructure, housing, transport, and urban planning.
Before venturing into politics, Kiaraho had a distinguished career in architecture. A graduate of the University of Nairobi, he worked as the principal architect at Archgrid Systems from 1994 and was affiliated with both the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) and the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK).
President William Ruto led tributes, describing Kiaraho as a humble, steadfast, and visionary leader whose commitment to public service left a lasting imprint on his constituents and the nation. "His life stands as an inspiration to leaders of this generation to rise above political rivalry and focus on service and the core issues that matter to the people," Ruto said.
Other leaders, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Tourism CS Rebecca Miano, and former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, also mourned Kiaraho, highlighting his dedication, humility, and collaborative spirit in Parliament.
The National Assembly Speaker has appointed a Funeral Preparation Committee chaired by Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku, assisted by Nyandarua MP Faith Gitau, to coordinate a fitting send-off. By law, a by-election must be held in Ol Kalou within 90 days to fill the parliamentary vacancy.
Kiaraho’s death comes amid a worrying pattern. 2025 and 2026 have seen several high-profile political figures pass away, including Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno, who died in a helicopter crash in Nandi County in February, and other prominent MPs and public servants.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko lamented the increasing rate of deaths among elected leaders, calling it “very alarming by elections all the time,” a sentiment shared by many Kenyans who are left grappling with sudden leadership voids.
As tributes pour in, the focus now shifts to honoring his legacy while navigating the emerging leadership loss crisis that has gripped parts of Kenya’s political sphere.
