Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa’s fastest man and Kenya’s 100m record holder, has withdrawn from the 2025 Diamond League Finals in Zurich due to injury.
The sprinter confirmed on Monday that hip and gluteal pain forced him out of the competition, dealing a blow to his season and Kenya’s representation at the event.
“Due to recent hip, iliopsoas, and gluteal pain experienced over the past few weeks, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to participate,” Omanyala said in a statement.
Despite the setback, he expressed optimism about returning in time for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month.
Omanyala’s 2025 season has been inconsistent, with strong early performances in South Africa and Uganda but mixed results in the Diamond League, including a last-place finish in Shanghai that raised concerns about his form. His most recent outing at the Kip Keino Classic saw him finish third in 10.07 seconds.
Medical experts say recovery from such muscle injuries can range from a few weeks to more than a month, depending on severity. Omanyala’s decision to pull out may be precautionary as he targets full fitness ahead of the Tokyo championships starting September 13.
Kenya will still have other representatives at the global event, including Faith Kipyegon in the 1500m and 5000m, and Beatrice Chebet in the 5000m.
