Kenyan Opposition figures have held an high-stakes meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday , 29 April in attendance was former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i , ex-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Mukhisa Kituyi, Former CSs Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi.
This meeting denotes formative steps of coming up with a broad-based pact to unseat President Ruto in 2027.
This was Matiang'i's first-ever public meeting with other opposition leaders, after his quite return from the US. His return has followed him orchestrated closed - door meetings to seek counsel on what political move to take.
On the other side, Gachagua, who is also another force to reckon with , has been very vocal against President Ruto . In his recent interview with Weru TV on 27, April, he revealed that they are looking forward to a meeting that would see the opposition unite and choose a single candidate, who would challenge Ruto in 2027.
“We will be meeting on Tuesday, and from that meeting, you are going to see a united team ready to liberate this country,” Gachagua said.
“I am vying for the presidency, as are Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa. We are all looking for votes. In the end, we shall talk and agree to back one candidate. Even if it’s not me, I will support whoever we settle on,” he added.
The former DP is also expected to launch his 2027 political vehicle in May, a move that would send ripples in the political landscape.
However, Matiang'i is yet to announce his presidential bid despite being endorsed by the Jubilee party led by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
These meeting came a day after the BBC highlighted heinous police violence on the anti 2024 Finance Bill protesters.
Using this platform, the opposition leaders highly condemned the violence requiring action against the perpetrators of such on the young protesters.
