POSTMORTEM ON JULIA WANGUI RETURNS INCONCLUSIVE RESULTS

A postmortem conducted on Julia Wangui Njoki, the 24-year-old woman who died while in custody at the Nanyuki Women’s Prison, has returned inconclusive results, further deepening the mystery surrounding her death.
According to a report by government pathologists led by Dr. Peter Ndegwa, while Wangui had bleeding in her brain, the hemorrhage was not severe or traumatic enough to conclusively link it to her cause of death.
Additionally, abnormalities were observed in her liver, pancreas, and lungs, raising further questions. The medical team has requested two more weeks to conduct advanced toxicology and histology tests to determine if poisoning, infection, or underlying disease may have contributed.
Wangui had been arrested during the recent Saba Saba protests and detained after failing to raise a KSh 50,000 bond. She later collapsed in remand and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Her death sparked outrage across Laikipia County, with protests erupting in Nanyuki town. Human rights groups have accused prison officers of negligence and possible abuse, demands that have prompted investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).
The final postmortem report is expected to be released by July 28.
