French President Emmanuel Macron appeared keen on experiencing Kenya beyond the formal boardrooms and diplomatic speeches as he immersed himself in the country’s music, cuisine and athletics during his visit to Nairobi for the Africa Forward Summit.
Before the high-level talks officially kicked off on Monday, May 11, Macron spent part of his visit engaging with some of Kenya’s globally celebrated talents, among them singer Bien-Aimé Baraza, marathon icon Eliud Kipchoge and celebrity chef Dennis Ombachi.
The French leader began his cultural engagements on Sunday evening during an exclusive private dinner attended by Bien and Ombachi. The intimate gathering gave Macron an opportunity to interact with Kenya’s creative industry in a more relaxed setting away from the official summit schedule.
Ombachi, who has gained continental recognition for his culinary content and storytelling through food, also shared a cooking session with Macron as the two prepared a meal together. The interaction painted a lighter and more personal side of diplomacy, with the French president appearing eager to connect with Kenyan culture through everyday experiences.
Hours later, Macron swapped the dinner table for running shoes as he joined Kipchoge for an early morning jog along the streets of Nairobi ahead of the Africa Forward Summit.
The run quickly captured attention online, with videos and images showing the French president keeping pace beside the celebrated marathon champion while security officers and other runners followed closely behind.
For many observers, the moment symbolised a softer and more relatable approach to diplomacy, built around shared human experiences aside from official speeches and closed-door meetings.
Kipchoge, widely regarded as one of the greatest marathoners in history and famed for his “No human is limited” philosophy, has become a global symbol of discipline, resilience and excellence.
Macron’s decision to join him for the run appeared carefully aligned with the broader message of the summit — partnership, innovation and people-driven connections.
The Africa Forward Summit, themed Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth, is being co-hosted by President William Samoei Ruto and Macron in Nairobi.
The summit is expected to focus on investment, innovation, climate action and renewed cooperation between African countries and France.
Speaking during the gathering, Ruto welcomed delegates to Kenya, describing the country as a place where the future of the continent is actively being shaped.
“Kenya, the cradle of humankind, is proud to host you once again on African soil, a place where history began, and where the future is being actively shaped,” Ruto stated.
Macron, on his part, termed the summit a major step in redefining ties between France and African nations.
“The Africa Forward Summit will be a significant milestone in that endeavour. For the first time, France and an English-speaking African country will co-chair this event, symbolising an open and future-focused relationship,” he said.
He further stressed that future partnerships between Africa and France would largely depend on innovators, entrepreneurs and creatives shaping change across the continent.
“The relationship between France and Africa cannot merely be declared, it must be built on the ground by innovators, entrepreneurs and creatives,” Macron added.
As he arrived in Nairobi, the French president also expressed optimism over strengthening practical cooperation between France and African nations.
“So much enthusiasm as I arrive in Kenya, on the eve of the Africa Forward summit. The summit of a renewed and win-win partnership. In Nairobi, let’s give it all our strength! We have so much to do together,” he said.
Macron’s engagements with Bien, Ombachi and Kipchoge ultimately offered a different tone to his Kenyan visit — one that blended diplomacy with culture, creativity and sport while placing Kenyan talent at the centre of a global conversation.
