President Ruto Arrives in Rome for Pope Francis' Funeral

President William Ruto has arrived in Rome, Italy, to join other world leaders and Catholic faithful attending the funeral of Pope Francis.

Speaking shortly after landing, President Ruto expressed his condolences and described Pope Francis as a global leader who championed peace, social justice, and care for the marginalized.

The funeral, being held today at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, has drawn over 50 heads of state and 130 foreign delegations. The ceremony is presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, in accordance with Pope Francis’ wishes for a modest service.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 following complications related to a stroke and heart failure. He led the Catholic Church for more than 12 years, during which he was widely recognized for his progressive reforms and advocacy on global issues.

President Ruto joins other world leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in paying their final respects.

Pope Francis will be laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, fulfilling his personal request for a simple burial.
