PRESIDENT RUTO BREAKS SILENCE OVER ALBERT OJWANG'S DEATH

President William Ruto has ordered a swift and transparent investigation into the death of popular influencer and blogger Albert Ojwang, who tragically died while in police custody. In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, June 11, the Head of State expressed deep shock and sadness over the incident, describing it as “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

"Like most Kenyans, and especially as a parent, I received the news of the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody with utter shock and deep dismay,” the President stated.

Ruto extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, particularly Mr. Meshack Ojwang, the father of the late influencer. He also condemned any form of police negligence or criminal conduct that may have contributed to the young man’s untimely death.

In response to the growing public outrage, the President directed the National Police Service (NPS) to fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ensure a thorough, transparent, and credible investigation is carried out.

“It must be borne in mind by every member of the National Police Service that whenever they take a person into custody, they assume a tremendous responsibility for that individual’s safety, security, and well-being, and must make every effort to discharge this duty conscientiously and without fail,” Ruto emphasized.

The President’s statement hinted at possible negligence or outright criminality on the part of the officers involved, raising serious concerns over police accountability and human rights within detention facilities.

Ruto urged the public to exercise patience as the investigation proceeds, warning against premature judgments that could interfere with the process. “I fully expect that the truth about what happened to Ojwang will be established in due course, and that justice will be served,” he concluded.
