RUSSIA LAUNCHES FRESH ATTACKS ON UKRAINE AMID PEACE TALKS

Russia has launched fresh overnight attacks on Ukraine, striking the capital Kyiv with a barrage of drones and missiles even as international peace talks continue.
According to Ukrainian officials, at least 14 people were killed, including a two-year-old child and two teenagers aged 14 and 17. More than 40 others were injured, with the number rising to 45 by Thursday August 28, 2025, morning as rescue teams searched for survivors in the rubble.
The assault involved 629 drones and missiles, among them Iranian-made Shahed drones fitted with jet engines. The strikes caused widespread damage, including to the European Union representative office in Kyiv, drawing sharp condemnation from Western leaders.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov maintained that the attacks were aimed at military infrastructure and insisted that Russia remains interested in pursuing peace negotiations. However, Moscow rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire, a position that has frustrated Ukrainian officials.
The strikes come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, Trump hosted President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on August 18. While discussions touched on security guarantees and ceasefire terms, no breakthrough was achieved.
President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks as proof of Russia’s “bad faith” in negotiations, calling for tougher international sanctions against Moscow.
The renewed violence underscores the fragile state of the peace process, with civilians once again paying the highest price as diplomacy falters.
