President William Ruto on Tuesday 8 July 2025 conferred Kenya’s highest civilian award, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), on former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in recognition of his global leadership in climate action, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.
The ceremony, held at State House Nairobi, was attended by senior government officials and dignitaries. In his remarks, President Ruto praised Ban for his enduring impact on international diplomacy and climate justice.
“Your legacy in climate change continues to inspire us as we confront its reality. Kenya celebrates your unwavering dedication to peace, gender equality, and reforms at the United Nations,” President Ruto said.
Ban Ki-moon, who has maintained close ties with Kenya through various global climate initiatives, expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“This award reaffirms our shared commitment to building a more just and sustainable world,” he said, adding that he considers Nairobi his “second home.”
The award comes as Ban continues to champion climate adaptation through the Global Centre on Adaptation, which is establishing a hub in Nairobi.
The Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart is the highest of three classes in Kenya’s honours system, typically reserved for sitting and former presidents, and globally renowned figures who have made outstanding contributions to humanity.
