Interior CS, Kipchumba Murkomen has found himself in hot soup with the senators following his failure to answer on who is responsible for Albert Ojwang's death .
The wednesday,11, June Senate sitting turned chaotic, causing a brief halt after the congressmen found Murkomen's answers wanting.
The session first begun with the CS being resentful for the act, considering it happened under his docket .
“One life lost is a life too many. As the CS in charge and as a father, it is regrettable that such an act happened in our country, particularly at the hands of police officers,” he said.
He continued assuring that action would be taken against the perpetrators of the heinous act.
“I will fully cooperate and put every effort into ensuring justice is served to this family. Anyone involved in this act will be punished severely, so they serve as an example. This should not happen under our new Constitution, " Murkomen affirmed.
The session went peaceful until Migori Senator , Eddy Oketch required the CS to declare on who he believed was responsible between him and the IG, Douglas Kanja.
"In this sitting, we want to be very clear, who, in the view of the CS and IG, are the suspects in this murder?” Oketch posed.
However, the CS seemingly dodged the question declaring that he was not in the position to answer the question.
“The Constitution does not give me the power to decide who is culpable. However, I am confident that we will do everything possible to ensure there is no cover-up or shielding of anyone,” Murkomen said causing an uproar.
He further defended his culpability response stating that there are legal frameworks like the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) , mandated to investigate deaths that occur in police custody, while he plays the role of oversight.
“We now have a mechanism for holding officers accountable. Thanks to this framework, several officers who have committed such heinous acts have been prosecuted,” he stated
“We will spare no effort, and where the ministry’s assistance is needed, we will provide it to ensure that justice is served to Ojwang’s family, his father, his wife, and their only child, " Murkomen added.
Senator Oketch further called for a report from the IPOA and National Police Service showing the steps taken towards investigating and bringing the suspects to book.
He then asked to know on how the IG had known that Ojwang had allegedly hit his head against the wall, as he said in his statement — that was later on proved faulty by the autopsy, and what Murkomen has done in response to these statements that were deemed as false , as per ipso facto.
“The IG informed the nation that Ojwang’ hit his head on a wall. The country needs to know where did he got that information? And now that the autopsy has contradicted that claim, what has the CS done?" Oketch posed towards the embattled CS.
