"SHOCK IN BOGOTA: 15-YEAR OLD SUSPECT SHOOTS PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER"

Bogotá, Colombia – June 7, 2025 — Presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay is fighting for his life after a shocking assassination attempt during a campaign rally in the Colombian capital.

Uribe, 39, was gunned down Saturday evening while addressing supporters in a Bogotá park. Eyewitness footage circulating online shows the moment of the attack, as gunshots rang out mid-speech, sending the crowd fleeing in panic.

Authorities have arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene. According to AFP, Uribe sustained three gunshot wounds, including two to the head and one to the knee. He was airlifted to Santa Fe Clinic, where doctors are battling to save his life.

His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, made a tearful public statement: “Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors.”

Uribe is a senator from the Centro Democrático (Democratic Center) party and announced his candidacy for the 2026 presidential race just months ago. His party called the shooting an attack on democracy itself.

President Gustavo Petro’s administration also condemned the violence, calling it an “affront to the democratic process.” The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the incident as a “direct threat to democracy.”

The candidate hails from a powerful political lineage. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed during a rescue operation in 1991 after being kidnapped by the Medellín cartel under Pablo Escobar. His father was a prominent union leader.

As the nation reels from the attempted assassination, security forces are on high alert, and supporters continue to hold vigil outside the hospital, praying for Uribe’s survival.
