TANZANIA MOURNS DEATH OF PRESIDENT SAMIA’S HUSBAND

Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday morning, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.

Hafidh, aged 76, died at about 8 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition, according to Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced his death.

The announcement brought an end to the life of a man who remained largely away from the political spotlight despite being married to one of Tanzania's most prominent political figures.

Hafidh was a trained agriculturalist and academic who built his career outside politics. His decision to maintain a private life meant that he was rarely seen at public events alongside President Samia, even after she became Tanzania's first female president in March 2021.

His death nevertheless holds a significant place in Tanzania's political history. When Samia assumed the presidency following the death of John Magufuli, Hafidh became the country's first First Gentleman.

The couple had been married for more than four decades, having tied the knot in 1978, long before Samia entered national politics. They had four children together — three sons and a daughter.

Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves in Zanzibar's House of Representatives. She is currently with her family as preparations for her father's burial continue.

Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, Hafidh's ancestral home, where he is expected to be laid to rest.

The news has triggered an outpouring of sympathy from Tanzania and across the region, with political leaders and continental institutions standing with President Samia and her family.

Kenyan President William Ruto was among the first regional leaders to publicly mourn Hafidh's death. Ruto said the loss was deeply painful for President Samia, her children and Tanzania as a whole, while assuring the neighbouring country of Kenya's solidarity.
Ruto also prayed for strength and comfort for the Tanzanian leader and her family as they navigate the loss.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf similarly sent his condolences to President Samia, her family and the Tanzanian people.

In his message, Youssouf expressed sympathy to the First Family and wished President Samia strength, courage and solace during the mourning period. He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Hafidh.

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye and other regional figures have also conveyed messages of solidarity, while the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention joined institutions expressing condolences.

For years, Hafidh's public presence was defined less by speeches and political appearances than by his quiet support for his family. His understated approach set him apart from presidential spouses who frequently occupy prominent positions in public life.

His death now brings to a close a decades-long marriage and marks the passing of a man whose role was historically significant, even though he largely chose to remain behind the scenes.

As funeral preparations continue in Kizimkazi, Tanzania has begun mourning its first First Gentleman, remembered primarily as an agricultural academic, a father and the longtime companion of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
