THE MOUNT KENYA STALEMATE

President William Ruto's entrance to presidency was highly boosted by the mount Kenya region, contributing about 40% of his total votes. Barely two years after , the chord that bound Ruto to the region ostensibly loosened trickling down to the impeachment of his DP Rigathi Gachagua, who declared a mass exodus of the mountain from supporting the president.

Without doubt the Ruto - Mount Kenya relationship has substantially been compromised and the mountain has seemingly grown cold on Ruto. However , he has quietly begun reconfiguring his political base in the Mt. Kenya region, building a fresh alliance of influential leaders to counter the growing sway of his estranged deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

The new formation includes Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, and Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri.

In recent weeks, this group has stepped up its visibility in the region, launching development tours and engaging with local communities—moves widely seen as part of a broader strategy to dilute Gachagua’s influence.

Ichung’wah, known for his fiery political rhetoric, has never tarried from openly criticized Gachagua during public rallies, accusing him of stoking unnecessary political strife for personal gain. Governor Waiguru, too, has voiced concern, cautioning that persistent divisions could jeopardize regional cohesion and economic progress.

Kindiki—who until recently maintained a low political profile—has emerged as a key face of government outreach in Mt. Kenya. His remarks branding Gachagua as “self-serving and disrespectful” marked a turning point in their strained relationship.

Meanwhile, some political players in the region like Jubilee's SG Jeremiah Kioni and Kiunjuri, considered a political centrist in the region, have taken a firm stand, faulting Gachagua for allegedly seeking to crown himself as the region’s undisputed leader without involving other stakeholders.

Speculations interpret the new alliance as part of a calculated plan by Ruto to reclaim the political narrative in Mt. Kenya. The region, long a decisive battleground in national elections, remains central to Ruto’s 2027 re-election strategy—especially as murmurs of dissatisfaction grow within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

In a bold countermove, Gachagua has partnered with former ministers Justin Muturi and Mithika Linturi to revive the little-known Democratic Citizens Party (DCP). The trio has embarked on grassroots mobilization, positioning Gachagua as the torchbearer of Mt. Kenya’s political future and presenting a direct challenge to Ruto’s hold on the region.

With both camps intensifying their efforts, the battle for Mt. Kenya’s political heart is fast shaping into a fierce contest—one that could redefine Kenya’s political trajectory ahead of the 2027 General Election.
