The Ugandan government has dismissed reports that it has agreed to receive deportees from the United States under a new immigration policy.
Media reports in the U.S. had suggested that Uganda was among countries targeted to host non-criminal deportees as part of President Donald Trump’s expanded deportation program.
However, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Oryem Okello refuted the claims, stressing that no such agreement exists.
“To the best of my knowledge we have not reached such an agreement. We do not have the facilities and infrastructure to accommodate such illegal immigrants in Uganda. So, we cannot take in such illegal immigrants,” Okello said.
The statement comes after leaked U.S. government documents indicated that Uganda was lined up as a potential “third country” for migrants expelled from America.
Uganda, which already hosts over a million refugees mainly from neighboring countries, insists it has not signed any accord with Washington on the matter.
