WORST SPEAKERS, CORRUPT HOUSE - WAMUCHOMBA

Referring to The Standard Newspaper's Tuesday headline, “Worst-ever Speakers, House of Disgrace,” Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has called out the August House, accusing members of reducing Parliament into a theatre of sycophancy—where applause has replaced accountability, and critical debate is traded for political convenience.

This follows a Monday sitting where President William Ruto met legislators alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. During the session, the President addressed the prevalence of corruption in civic bodies, particularly implicating the MPs.

Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) account, Wamuchomba questioned why legislators—who are supposed to represent the mwananchi—would sarcastically cheer when such a grave indictment was made against them.
In what she termed as “through shameless claps,” the firebrand legislator exposed a disturbing script allegedly used to push through the 2024 Finance Bill in a clandestine manner—despite the fierce Gen Z protests.

"I saw MPs clapping when they were smoked out as corrupt by the president the same way they shamelessly clapped when finance bill 2024 was shelved in statehouse amidst Genzees protests."

She further accused legislators of accepting handouts in order to pass controversial and punitive bills.
“In 2019, I was accused of maligning Parliament when I revealed that Ksh 10,000 was shared in toilets to legislators to push through a bill that allowed mercury-laced sugar into the market for consumption,” Wamuchomba wrote, noting that she was later denied certain privileges for protesting against such shenanigans.

"I was subjected to grilling in the powers and privileges committee," she continued.
"This time round who is to be grilled? "
Wamuchomba, who was handed a 20 days suspension by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula for walking out in protest after critiquing Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s responses on the Kware mass killings and dumping as unsatisfactory, stated:

“I’m still serving my 20-day suspension from the same Parliament for asking critical questions to the Executive,” she concluded.

The unfolding events have painted the two Speakers as seemingly partial and midwives of corruption-tainted chambers. The situation has since spiraled into a simmering push for impeachment, should the standoff persist.
Moreover, MPs have demanded that Speaker Wetang’ula summon the President back to Parliament to deliberate on the corruption allegations—citing evidence—and have threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against the third-in-command if he fails to meet their demands.
