Two people were killed and several others injured today Thursday morning after an Israeli strike hit the Holy Family Catholic Church in Deir al-Balah, the only Catholic church in Gaza. Among the injured is the parish priest, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, a well-known figure in the Christian community.
The attack claimed the lives of a 60 year old janitor and an 84 year old woman who was under psychosocial care within the church compound. The church had been sheltering dozens of civilians both Christians and Muslims, including children with disabilities.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with reports indicating at least two in critical condition, including women, the elderly, and a child with special needs. Witnesses say the church suffered heavy damage, likely from tank shelling.
The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged awareness of the incident and confirmed investigations are underway. The strike occurred near Al-Ahli Hospital, an area that has endured repeated bombardment for over a week.
Today’s attack raises renewed concerns about the safety of civilian shelters in Gaza amid an Israeli offensive that has now killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. Women and children account for more than half of the reported fatalities.
The Holy Family Church, one of the last remaining refuges for Gaza’s Christian minority estimated at just 1,000 people has served as a lifeline for those trapped in the conflict. Its destruction adds to growing fears over the shrinking space for civilian protection in the war-torn territory.
