Dolores “Dodie” Osteen, the revered co-founder of Lakewood Church and mother of renowned televangelist Joel Osteen, has passed away at the age of 91.
Her death was confirmed by Joel Osteen, who announced that his mother died peacefully at home of natural causes. In a statement, he described her as “the beloved matriarch of Lakewood Church, an inspiration to millions.”
Dodie Osteen co-founded Lakewood Church in 1959 alongside her late husband, Pastor John Osteen. She remained a prominent figure in the church community even after her husband's death in 1999, particularly known for her prayer ministry and her faith testimony.
In 1981, Dodie was diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer and given only weeks to live. She defied the odds and later documented her miraculous recovery in her widely read memoir Healed of Cancer, which inspired Christians around the world.
Known affectionately as “Mama Dodie,” she was admired for her warmth, resilience, and unwavering faith. She raised five children—Joel, Paul, Lisa, Tamara, and April—most of whom have served in ministry.
Lakewood Church, which has grown to become one of the largest churches in the United States, said in a statement: “Her life and legacy have touched countless lives. She will be deeply missed but her spirit will live on through the ministry she helped build.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in the coming days.
