KENYA’S TOURISM SECTOR HITS RECORD 2.4M VISITORS

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has lauded the sector as one of Kenya’s most resilient economic pillars after posting record-breaking performance in 2024. Speaking during an interview on Tuesday night, Miano revealed that Kenya welcomed 2.4 million international visitors last year — the highest in the country’s history. The surge generated Sh452 billion in earnings, underscoring tourism’s role as a top revenue earner.

“Tourism is on an upward trajectory. At the close of 2024, we welcomed 2.4 million visitors — the highest ever — translating into Sh452 billion in revenue,” she said.

The sector, she added, directly employs over 1.1 million people across hotels, airlines, tour operators, and parks, while indirectly supporting more than 3 million livelihoods in agriculture, transport, construction, and retail. In total, the industry sustains the lives of over four million Kenyans.

Beyond revenue, Miano emphasized tourism’s impact on poverty reduction, especially in rural areas where many attractions are located.Looking ahead, the CS outlined efforts to diversify Kenya’s offerings beyond its famed wildlife and beaches. She highlighted growing interest in cultural, adventure, wellness, culinary, and astro-tourism, citing popular draws such as nyama choma.

Reforms have also been introduced to improve Kenya’s global competitiveness, including greater visa openness, enhanced electronic travel authorization, and streamlined immigration services. “Our goal is not just to grow visitor numbers and revenue, but also to expand employment opportunities across the country,” she stressed.

Miano concluded that tourism in Kenya is not only about travel, but about jobs, income, and sustainable growth that benefits millions of citizens.
