In a historic medical milestone, surgeons at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) have successfully removed 20.86 kilograms of excess breast tissue from a teenage girl in what is being hailed as the world’s largest gigantomastia surgery ever performed.
The groundbreaking procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of Kenyan specialists in collaboration with visiting reconstructive surgeons Professor Lew and Dr. Kim from Yonsei University, South Korea. The international partnership combined advanced surgical expertise and innovative techniques to ensure a successful outcome in this rare and complex case.
The patient was diagnosed with juvenile gigantomastia, a rare disorder that causes excessive and rapid breast enlargement, leading to severe back pain, restricted movement, and emotional distress. KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Evanson Kamuri commended the medical team for their precision and teamwork, calling the surgery a landmark in Kenya’s medical history.
“This is a proud moment for KNH and for Kenya. It shows that with collaboration, skill, and commitment, we can deliver world-class healthcare locally,” Dr. Kamuri said.
The surgery, which took several hours, was completed without complications. The hospital confirmed that the teenage patient is recovering well and has already shown significant improvement in her overall health and well-being.
Medical experts have described the operation as a breakthrough in reconstructive and plastic surgery, underscoring Kenya’s growing reputation as a regional center for advanced medical care. KNH reaffirmed its dedication to pioneering life-changing surgeries and fostering global partnerships to enhance healthcare standards across Africa.
