MARAGA URGES KENYANS TO REJECT HANDOUTS FROM POLITICIANS

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called on Kenyans to reject the long-standing culture of expecting monetary handouts from politicians during campaign seasons, saying it undermines democracy and fuels poor leadership.
Speaking during a public engagement over the weekend, Maraga emphasized the need for a shift in the country’s political mindset, urging citizens to support issue-based leadership rather than transactional politics.
“We must change the narrative that every time a politician comes around, you expect money. That’s not leadership. That’s bribery,” Maraga said.
The former CJ, who recently declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027, said his campaign would be "Wanjiku-funded", relying on contributions from ordinary Kenyans instead of wealthy individuals or corrupt networks.
“Even KSh 10, 20, or 100 makes a difference. If one million Kenyans give KSh 100 each, that’s KSh 100 million. That’s how we take back this country from cartels,” he added.
Maraga criticized politicians who use their wealth to buy loyalty and votes, saying such practices have led to a cycle of impunity, unaccountability, and failed leadership.
His remarks come at a time when Kenyans, especially the youth, are increasingly vocal about governance and accountability—amplified by recent Gen Z-led protests against poor leadership and economic hardship.
Maraga’s statement has sparked debate online, with supporters praising his integrity, while others question the feasibility of a purely donation-driven campaign in Kenya’s current political climate.
