Lecturers at Moi University in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, have rejected an offer from the university council, calling it inadequate. The striking academic staff have vowed to continue with their industrial action until all their demands are fully addressed. Speaking to the media on Monday August 25, 2025, the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) Eldoret branch secretary-general, Dr. Busolo Wekesa, stated that although talks with the employer have been ongoing since the previous Thursday, the offer presented was insufficient.
“We have received the offers and are in talks with the employer, but staff have reviewed them and feel the proposals fall short. They are unwilling to accept anything less than what was agreed upon,” Dr. Wekesa said. He added that members were still reviewing the documents on Monday before deciding on their next steps.
UASU Moi University branch chairman, Richard Kero, expressed frustration, saying that despite staff working diligently to recover lost time following a previous strike, the university has let them down. “Many of our members are struggling financially. Some have been blacklisted by the Credit Reference Bureau due to unpaid loans, and others have not received their pensions,” said Kero. The lecturers began their strike on August 20 and have stated they will not resume work until the university council implements the return-to-work formula signed on November 30, 2024.
The union is demanding payment of salaries for June and July 2025 in accordance with the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). It also insists that the university fully implement clauses regarding staff review and promotions, as well as retirement age, as outlined in the National CBA.
