SGR NIGHT TRAIN SUSPENSION SPARKS SECURITY CONCERNS, MP NELSON KOECH CLAIMS

The abrupt suspension of the 10:00 pm Madaraka Express train from Mombasa to Nairobi on Sunday night has taken a dramatic turn, after Belgut MP Nelson Koech claimed the disruption was due to a foiled security threat—not a technical fault, as initially reported.
Kenya Railways had earlier attributed the last-minute cancellation to a technical hitch, apologizing to passengers and assuring them of safety being the top priority. The suspension, announced just 30 minutes before departure, left hundreds stranded at the Mombasa Terminus.
In a statement on Monday, however, MP Koech alleged that intelligence reports revealed a plan by unknown individuals to attack the train and pin the blame on the government amid rising political tensions.
“What I got is that there was a team of people who had wanted to attack the train… and blame the government,” Koech stated.
Despite the disruption, Kenya Railways arranged alternative transport for affected travelers and allowed all Sunday tickets to remain valid for a rescheduled Monday morning departure.
This latest revelation raises broader concerns over public safety during periods of political unrest, especially as protests and opposition movements gain momentum across major cities.
Kenya Railways has not issued any comment in response to Koech’s security claims. Authorities have also not confirmed whether there is an active investigation into the alleged threat.
