A Nairobi court has ordered the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to furnish all evidence it intends to rely on in the case against Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. This follows the prosecution’s admission that it had not complied with an earlier directive to disclose materials to the defence.
“Those documents and statements ought to have been supplied by now,I therefore direct the prosecution to comply with the earlier orders,” the magistrate ruled, emphasizing the need for procedural fairness.
State Counsel Victor Awiti sought an additional two weeks, citing difficulties accessing documents from Trans Nzoia County offices. However, the defence opposed the request, calling it a misuse of the court process.
Natembeya faces charges of unlawful acquisition of public property, conflict of interest, and indirectly benefiting from public funds. Outside court, plainclothes police arrested three suspected county staff, escalating tensions. The matter will be mentioned on June 16, 2025.
