Teachers in Kenya will see their pay rise after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) signed a new 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The agreement, finalised on July 18, 2025, will see the lowest paid teacher earn a basic salary of Ksh 28,620, up from Ksh 23,000, while the highest paid teacher will take home Ksh 167,415.
KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori said classroom teachers will now receive a fairer share, with those in the lowest grade enjoying a 29.6% raise, and those in higher positions a 5% increase. Misori noted that previous CBAs favoured principals and department heads, while this deal focuses on ordinary teachers.
On allowances, the commuter allowance remains unchanged, ranging from Ksh 4,000 to Ksh 16,000 depending on grade. However, the agreement includes the phasing out of the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) by June 30, 2026. The guidelines had been criticised for affecting teachers’ promotions and job security.
The new pay deal will be implemented from July 30, 2025, until June 30, 2029.
The signing ceremony at Eka Hotel, Nairobi, was attended by KUPPET officials and TSC Acting CEO Eveleen Jesang Mitei.
