Congolese rhumba star Koffi Olomide's decision to walk away from Fred Obachi Machoka's golden jubilee celebrations has sparked speculation that an earlier disagreement with fellow musician Mbilia Bel may have contributed to the incident.
The moment unfolded during the Machoka@50 concert at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on Saturday, October 10, 2026, where thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate the veteran broadcaster's 50 years in the media industry.
A video circulating online captured Koffi raising his hands and walking away after Machoka invited him to remain on stage, dance with him and participate in cutting the anniversary cake. The broadcaster appeared to try to persuade the singer to stay, but Koffi proceeded to leave the stage.
While some reports attributed his departure to fatigue following his performance, others linked it to reported tensions with Mbilia Bel earlier in the evening.
According to accounts from people familiar with the event, disagreements reportedly emerged after delays disrupted the concert programme, leaving the organisers to contend with the performance schedules of the two rhumba stars.
A programme circulating online indicated that Mbilia Bel was scheduled to perform at 8:35 pm, while Koffi's slot was set for around 10 pm.
However, as the evening progressed behind schedule, organisers reportedly asked Mbilia Bel to allow Koffi to perform first. She allegedly declined, with her team proceeding to the stage for her performance.
The decision reportedly frustrated Koffi and members of his entourage, although neither the singer nor his representatives publicly confirmed the account.
The alleged disagreement has since fuelled speculation that the backstage tension may have carried over into Koffi's subsequent interaction with Machoka. However, there is no official confirmation establishing a direct connection between the two incidents.
The reported tension has also revived discussions about the longstanding rivalry associated with Koffi and Mbilia Bel, two influential figures in Congolese rhumba.
The pair have been linked to years of reported friction, including pointed remarks in interviews. In a 2021 interview, Mbilia Bel reportedly criticised Koffi's conduct towards fellow musicians.
She also alleged in a 2025 interview that someone in the music industry had attempted to undermine her career for about three decades. Although she did not identify the individual in the account provided, her remarks prompted speculation among fans and entertainment commentators.
There is, however, no confirmed evidence from the supplied accounts establishing that these past remarks directly caused the reported disagreement at Machoka's celebration.
The concert featured an extensive lineup, including Koffi Olomide and his Quartier Latin International band, singer Cindy Le Coeur, Mbilia Bel, Sam Fan Thomas, Les Wanyika, Them Mushrooms, Alicios Theluji and Freshly Mwamburi. Media personalities Jeff Koinange and Churchill served as hosts.
Despite the reports of backstage friction and Koffi's departure from the cake-cutting ceremony, both Koffi and Mbilia Bel completed their performances.
Machoka subsequently thanked the fans who attended the celebrations and described the event as a success.
Neither Koffi nor Mbilia Bel had publicly addressed the alleged clash at the time of publication, leaving the circumstances surrounding the reported disagreement and the singer's stage walk-off unresolved.
