NAIROBI COUNTY TO REVOKE LICENSES OF ILLEGAL WASTE DUMPERS

The Nairobi County Government has announced a sweeping crackdown on businesses accused of dumping waste at illegal sites.

In a statement Tuesday, County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria said the county will revoke licenses for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Private Service Providers (PSPs) found violating waste disposal laws.

“Any individual or entity found dumping illegally will have their license revoked and face prosecution in accordance with the law,” Mosiria said.

Under the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act, 2015, offenders risk fines of up to Ksh200,000 or imprisonment for up to two years.

Mosiria noted that despite the closure of unfit dumping sites, some businesses continue to use them, endangering residents living nearby.

“Once we close an illegal dumping site, all service providers must stop using it immediately. We are now resuming operations targeting those who continue,” he added.

The warning follows a separate operation launched Monday against hotels and other businesses in the Central Business District. Authorities say many establishments have failed to set up proper waste systems, instead leaving sacks of garbage along road reserves and walkways.

“If you walk through the CBD, you will find garbage dumped along walkways, contributing to the untidiness of our city,” Mosiria said.

The county government says enforcement operations will continue as part of efforts to restore Nairobi’s cleanliness and protect public health.
