Naivas Supermarket has come out strongly to refute claims that it has been selling expired products and that some of its outlets in Nairobi have been shut down by authorities. The popular retail chain, in a press statement issued Tuesday, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and damaging to its reputation.
The controversy began after a Nairobi County Assembly Health Committee conducted a spot check at the Moi Avenue branch, during which concerns were raised over food safety standards. Some members of the committee alleged that expired items had been found on the shelves and questioned whether all staff had up-to-date medical certifications.
In response, Naivas clarified that no expired products were sold and that the company maintains rigorous checks to ensure that all items meet safety and quality standards. “We take these accusations seriously but firmly state that all our operations are in full compliance with public health regulations,” the statement read.
The company also categorically denied that any of its stores had been closed, stating that all branches across the city and countrywide are open and operating as usual. Naivas hinted that the claims could be part of a smear campaign or an attempt to extort the business. The retailer added that it does not condone corruption or intimidation and is exploring legal action against those behind the false reports.
"We stand by our promise to offer safe, quality products to our customers and remain committed to transparency in all aspects of our operations,” the management emphasized.
As investigations continue, Nairobi residents are encouraged to remain calm and await verified updates. Naivas has assured its loyal customers of continued service and high standards in product safety.
