The Teachers Service Commission has revealed that it has permanently deregistered a minimum of 69 teachers for abusing students, following its investigation of more than 100 reported misconduct cases in January 2024.
During his testimony before the Senate Education Committee in Mombasa, TSC Director of Legal, Labour and Industrial Relations, Cavin Anyuor, revealed that the commission has obtained 111 cases starting from January 2024.
The accusations include sexual intercourse with students, flirting, molestation, lesbianism, and engaging in pornography.
Of the 111, 69 teachers were dismissed and deregistered, so they can't work as teachers anywhere in the world anymore. Their teaching licence has been revoked permanently," Anyuor said.
Nine teachers were dismissed but not deregistered, 25 were suspended and can be recalled after serving suspension, and one intern was removed from the register.
Not everyone is guilty; at least four of them were acquitted and went free. We attempt to be fair but firm on learner abuse," Anyuor said.
